May 1 which is celebrated world wide as Labor Day (except of course in the US where their tradition is going against global tradition) is in our family an equally important day. Similar to Labor Day, its Mabel Day or Mabel's birthday. And each year it's celebrated in style. And just in case anyone forgets to celebrate it in the manner it deserves, expect to receive a call. From Mabel.
This year Mabel took us all for watching the movie Bahubali 2, The Conclusion. While I did not know much about the movie, I did see a lot of buzz about it in the print and television media. It was difficult to even get tickets which were priced obnoxiously to begin with. But Mabel managed. And the whole family in Mumbai descended on Phoenix Mall, Kurla for the much anticipated event.
While waiting for others to join in, I was given an update on the film and its status by the family Bollywood expert, Prem.
The film was budgeted at a cost of around Rs. 250 crores (~US$ 40 million) for both parts, Bahubali in 4 languages - Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Hindi. It was simultaneously released in around 9,000 screens all over the world including around 800 screens in the US. The film was released worldwide on April 28, 2017.
It created multiple records on the first day itself for max. screens as well as max. first day collection of any Indian film. It collected over Rs. 100 crore on Day 1 (~US$ 16 million). And just yesterday it became the first Indian film to cross the Rs. 1000 crore mark. In only 10 days.
The film was aptly described by a friend as Amar Chitra Katha on film. Amar Chitra Katha is the Indian mythological comic books we all enjoyed as kids. The film itself was well made and enjoyable. However at over 3 hours it was too long and the last hour was spent in hoping for a quick end. Which unfortunately was not to be.
There was one thing that i realized at the end of the film. The smartest people as regards to knowing the pulse of the people are film makers. Whether its Hollywood, Bollywood. Or as Bahubali 2 has shown. In Tollywood.

If possible, see the film. The US release has English sub-titles. In the mean while watch the trailer. In Hindi. And Tamil.
